In Spirit
In Spirit is a series of self-portraits, shot during the 2020 pandemic in my Brooklyn apartment.
By posing in front of prints of my own creative work – snapshots, grainy film memories, collage – I’m able to transport myself to places, people, and feelings from which I am cut off in the quarantined present.
This way of traveling allows me to feel the freedom of swimming in a wide open sea or the comfort of seeing a beloved face. It’s a way of giving something impossible a photographic reality. By creating an image that could be true, I can be there in spirit.
But wherever the mind travels, real life has an undeniable way of asserting itself.
This is an exploration of the vast space between longing and reality, and all the strange and wondrous ways they intersect.
In Spirit è una serie di autoritratti realizzati dalla fotografa Alison Luntz nel corso del 2020, durante la pandemia, nel suo appartamento di Brooklyn.
Utilizzando lavori precedentemente eseguiti – istantanee, ricordi su pellicole sgranate e collage – e posando abilmente davanti ad essi, la Luntz ha trovato una strada molto originale e ironica per lenire il suo blues pandemico riuscendo a trasportarsi in luoghi, ricongiungersi con persone, rivivere sentimenti e sensazioni vissute prima che la quarantena li tagliasse fuori.
In Spirit rappresenta un viaggio che ha il sapore di una fuga immaginaria dalle restrizioni vissute durante il lockdown, l’espressione di un desiderio, di un “vorrei essere li” tradotto in immagini e che esplora il divario tra il dove siamo, il dove o con chi vorremmo essere che ognuno di noi ha sperimentato quando tutto il mondo si è fermato.
Come afferma la Lunz “questa modalità di viaggio mi permette di sentire la libertà di quando stai nuotando in mare aperto oppure il conforto mentre osservi un volto che ami. È un modo per dare a qualcosa di impossibile una tangibilità fotografica. Creando un’immagine che potrebbe essere vera, posso essere lì con lo spirito.
Ma ovunque la mente viaggi, la vita reale ha un modo innegabile di affermarsi.
Questa è un’esplorazione del vasto spazio tra il desiderio e la realtà, e tutti i modi strani e meravigliosi in cui essi si intersecano”.
In Spirit ha ricevuto un riconoscimento speciale della giuria dei Lensculture Art Photography Awards 2021

Bio
I grew up in North Carolina, in the southern US, and went to school in the Boston area – studying theater directing before photography became my focus. It was at college that I first picked up a film camera, and began to see life through a lens.
Since 2011, I’ve lived in New York City and worked as a freelance photographer. In that time, I’ve worked in studios on portraiture and commercial still life, and spent time shooting events, weddings, and street photography.
I thrive on the constant influx of new ideas in this city, and I am continually fascinated with the power of a photograph to be both representative and surreal. It is an art form with one leg in reality and one leg in dreams, and where those two meet and blur is often the focus of my work.
Originaria della Carolina del Nord, nel sud degli Stati Uniti, Alison Luntz ha studiato a Boston per diventare una regista teatrale prima che la fotografia diventasse il suo principale interesse.
E’ stato durante il college che per la prima volta ha preso in mano una macchina fotografica analogica ed ha iniziato così a vedere il mondo attraverso un obiettivo.
Trasferitasi a New York nel 2011 ha iniziato a lavorare come fotografa freelance e tutt’ora si occupa di progetti di ritrattistica, still life commerciale e street photography. Come afferma la stessa Luntz “rimango continuamente affascinata dal potere di una fotografia di essere sia rappresentativa che surreale – è una forma d’arte con una gamba nella realtà e una nel sogno, il centro del mio lavoro è spesso dove realtà e sogno si incontrano e si confondono”.
